Economic Issues in Regional Integration (ERI)

This course aims to broaden participants’ understanding of various aspects of economic, monetary, and financial integration. Drawing on theory and on case studies from experiences in several regions of the world, the course looks into the requirements for economic and monetary integration; reviews trade, financial, and monetary integration; covers costs and benefits of the integration process; and discusses political economy aspects of integration.

Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to: 

• Describe the various types of regional integration and cooperation, as well as the dynamics of the integration process. 

• Initiate an analysis of the costs and benefits for their countries of various integration schemes. 

• Assess the degrees of convergence in various macroeconomic variables in the run-up to deeper integration, as well as the degree of convergence following integration. 

• Summarize the economic and political arguments regarding integration involving their country
